Product Queries

Where is Blue Artemis china made?

Blue Artemis china is hand decorated and crafted with great care and skill in Somerset, England.

Are Blue Artemis products dishwasher and microwave safe?

Yes, they are safe for use in the dishwasher and microwave. The exception being items with metallic gold or silver content which are NOT microwave safe, but can be placed in the dishwasher. Each product description will state which catergoery it belongs to. We do, however, recommend washing by hand using low temperatures and liquid detergents and then drying with a soft cloth.

Is Blue Artemis china oven and/or freezer proof?

No, Blue Artemis china is UNSUITABLE for overn and freezer use.

How should I care for my Blue Artemis china?

Our products are microwave and dishwasher safe EXCEPT those with metallic gold or silver content which should NOT be placed in a microwave. We recommend using low temperatures and liquid detergents when washing, or alternatively washing by hand and drying with a soft cloth. Blue Artemis china is unsuitable for oven and freezer use.

Why is the pattern not always the same on my Blue Artemis china?

Each piece is decorated by hand using designs from an eclectic mix of unique waterslide motifs. This means no two pieces will be identical and even when you select from a defined collection, there will always be minor signs of variation. This is what makes Blue Artemis china distinct and unique and sets it apart from mass produced ware.

Why do plates and dishes sometimes have slight marks underneath?

These marks are where items have been supported with kiln furniture when fired. Plates and dishes are supported in three spots with pins - this suspends them and prevents them from sticking to each other. In the majority of cases there are no marks at all.

What are seconds?

Blue Artemis is handmade and occasionally slight faults appear in the glaze and pattern. These do not pass our rigorous inspections, and are therefore deemed as seconds. Seconds are sold at a discounted price. Please email us for any current seconds stock.

What is the glaze?

The glaze is a specialist finish that is fused to our Blue Artemis china in the firing process, giving it a durable, protective coat and beautiful semi-gloss finish.

What is porcelain (china)?

Porcelain (is a ceramic material made by heating materials, generally including kaolin, in a kiln to temperatures between 1,200 and 1,400 °C (2,200 and 2,600 °F). The toughness, strength, and translucence of porcelain, relative to other types of pottery, arises mainly from vitrification and the formation of the mineral mullite within the body at these high temperatures. Porcelain is also referred to as china or fine china in many English-speaking countries. Subsequent fring of applied artwork is at a lower temperature of 780.

Courses & Workshops

What can I expect?

First and foremost a friendly and inclusive atmosphere to create a uniquely decorated piece of bone china. The workshop lasts two hours. This gives plenty of time to experiment and discuss your ideas before committing them to your china.

Do I need to be artisitic?

Absolutely not! Just be willing to try something new and let the magic happen.

What can I decorate?

You have the choice of two different mug shapes, a small plate or a set of four square tiles.

When can I take it home?

Once the design is complete it is taken away to thoroughly dry and then fired and then ready for collection. Details of collection will vary depending on workshop location but will be made clear when you book.

How do I look after my creation?

Your design will be suitable to use in the microwave. It is also dishwasher safe, although it is recommended you wash by hand as cleaning agents and salt in dishwashers abrade the surface over time, causing a loss of sheen and colour.

Can anyone join the workshop?

Of course! The only restriction being children under 16 need to be parent/guardian accompanied. The workshop is suitable for all ages from 8 to 80 …and beyond.

Can I bring my friends?

By all means. If you want to book as a family or friends’ group that’s fine. Groups are limited to ten participants.

If I like a workshop can I do it again?

Oh yes… we welcome enthusiastic people who want to explore their untapped creativity and help them develop further.

Is there an advanced workshop?

Yes, there is! This workshop is designed for those wishing to develop their skills further and will include a short talk on design and composition and how you can use it to enhance your finished work.
